A blood test measuring quantitative serum hCG and a transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound will establish how far along the pregnancy is and confirm that it is in the uterus (rather than ectopic). Begin a prenatal vitamin with folic acid immediately if you are continuing the pregnancy — neural tube formation occurs in the first weeks, often before a missed period.

If the pregnancy is unexpected, a counsellor or clinician can outline options without judgement. Time matters: the sooner options are explored, the more choices are available. Emergency contraception is no longer appropriate once a test is positive — the pregnancy is already established.

Testing After a Recent Pregnancy Loss or Termination

hCG does not disappear immediately after pregnancy ends. After a miscarriage or medical/surgical termination, levels decline but may take two to six weeks to fall below the detection threshold of a home test.
